Why Labb built it

After years of building platforms for automotive groups on AWS, we kept meeting companies with a handful of services, a modest budget and a data-residency requirement. They needed the discipline of Kubernetes at a cost and an operational load they could carry. Kipper is the platform we wanted to hand them: opinionated, complete, and running on hardware they control.

We run our own products on it, which is the fastest way to find out what is missing.

What people ask about Kipper

Is Kipper free?

Yes. Kipper is open source under the Apache 2.0 license. The software is free; Labb charges for installation help, consulting and operations.

Which servers does it run on?

Any Linux root server or virtual machine with SSH access: Hetzner, OVH, your own hardware, or a cloud VM. A single node is enough to start; more nodes can be added later.

How do backups work?

Velero is installed with the platform. Backups can target S3-compatible storage, and Kipper exposes them in the console and the CLI.

Can we leave Kipper later?

Yes. Underneath is standard Kubernetes (k3s) with standard components. The apps are plain deployments and can be moved to any other cluster.

Who maintains it?

Labb Consulting. The code, issues and releases are public on GitHub, and the engineers who write it are the ones you talk to.
